A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky was my first complete game.  It was an overly ambitious, full-length RPG that I had no business making with my rudimentary understanding of game development at the time, but it still has its charm.

The mechanics are pretty by-the-numbers rpg maker, the mapping is generally not detailed enough, and the graphics are RTP with an occasional edit, but the writing mostly holds up and some of the songs are great--even if they're MIDI.  If you're willing to overlook the simplicity of the battle system and the rough-around-the-edges aspects of the game, there's enough here to legitimately enjoy.

The story starts with Mint and Ivy, two sisters who are grappling with the death of their father.  They live on a barren planet, so barren that they've never run into any people outside of their immediate family.  But, there's a rope hanging next to their house.  It's always been there.  It goes up and up and up, so far that it disappears into the clouds.  With their father dead, their attempts at foraging falling short, and the world filled with dangerous monsters, they have no choice but to climb the rope.  What awaits them, above the clouds?

Features:
-Original music
-Character-centric storyline
-40+ hours of gameplay
-Different equipment sets that modify the ways characters play
-A crafting system featuring over 100 pieces of unique equipment
-LOTS of side quests
-Recruit an odd assortment of townspeople and pass legislation to develop your own village
-Raise a pig to compete in the Pig Arena and win prizes
-New game+ feature that includes multiple bonus endings--a mechanic I blatantly stole from Chrono Trigger

stuck on the first temple of the elder gods puzzle, I feel so stupid no combination works for the pilgrimage thing, the sun rises in the east right?

The sun does rise in the east, yeah.

So, I can't open up this game in the editor anymore (no longer have RPG Maker VX), and there used to be a guide up on rpgmaker.net, but that site's been down for some time.  If you can give the text to the puzzle, I can reason it out, but that's about the best I can do.

The room has 6 pedestals with buttons I can step on: 1 northwest, 1 northeast, 1 east, 1 southeast, 1 southwest, 1 west. here's the text:

On the first day of his pilgrimage to the holy land, St. Ignus rose with the morning sun. The second day, he set out to the west, but, finding the mountains too difficult to cross, he waited a day and decided to travel northeast to circumvent them. The fourth day, he traveled a great distance southwest through the desert. The fifth day, St. Ignus traveled north, and, not finding the holy land, he got lost in the desert on his way home, and on the sixth day he had traveled far to the southeast. Lost and crestfallen, he prayed for guidance, and he heard God’s voice echoing in his heart, “Child your faith in me has waivered. When faced with adversity, you changed your path. This is why you have become lost.” St. Ignus understood, and he found God on the seventh day, going to sleep with the sun.

Seems like it should be east, northeast, southwest, north, southeast, west.  I'm really hoping I don't get my own puzzle wrong, haha.

thank you this worked! I was adding a west between the first 2 steps, didn't even catch that lol

Okay, good!  Glad I could help!

first rpg maker game longer than 30 minutes that i played
can't believe it's been like a decade since then

Yeah, time's really flying.  I had the thought when uploading this that I've been making games now for around 15 years!

Very excited to give this a spin! Big fan of Jimmy, super excited for Earless God, it's gonna be cool to experience this like, sapling of future ambitions!

It's a bit of a relic, but there are still some aspects that I'm proud of.  Hope you like it!
